Pressure-controlling bolting:
Bolting used to assemble or join pressure-controlling parts.
Example: Bolting on ram, seat, or seal retainer bolting, shear ram blade bolting.
Closure bolting:
Bolting used to assemble or join wellbore pressure-containing parts, including end and outlet connections.
Example: Flange bolting, bonnet bolting and end-connection bolting on BOPs, ram door bolting, and hub clamp bolting.
Pressure-retaining bolting:
Bolting used to assemble or join pressure-retaining parts whose failure would result in a release of wellbore fluid to the environment.
Example: Studs and nuts on top of a hydraulic connector, and clamp bolts.
Utility bolting:
All bolting that is required to mount equipment and accessories to the drill through equipment that is not closure bolting, pressure retaining, or pressure controlling.
Example: bolting on lifting eyes, pad eyes (non-welded), wear bushing, nameplate, clamps for tubing, guards.

This specification establishes the minimum quality management system requirements for organisations that manufacture products or provide manufacturing-related processes under a product specification for use in the petroleum and natural gas industry.
This specification outlines the requirements of a quality management system for an organisation to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide reliable products and manufacturing-related processes that meet customer and legal requirements.
If an organisation performs activities addressed by this specification, no claims to exclusion of those activities are permitted. Where any requirement of this specification cannot be applied due to the nature of an organisation, the requirement can be considered for exclusion. Where exclusions are made, the basis for claiming exclusions is to be identified. Furthermore, such exclusions cannot affect the organisation’s ability, or responsibility, to provide products and related servicing that meet customer and applicable regulatory requirements.
The quality management system requirements detailed in this specification are in alignment with the section requirements and format of document used for the provision of services and use of service-related product (API Q2). Information marked “NOTE” are not requirements but are provided for guidance in understanding or clarifying the associated requirement.
This standard specifies requirements for the following drill stem elements: upper and lower kelly valves; square and hexagonal kellys; drill stem subs; standard steel and non-magnetic drill collars; drilling and coring bits.
This standard is not applicable to drill pipe and tool joints, rotary shouldered connection designs, thread gauging practice, or grand master, reference master and working gauges.
This specification identifies requirements for the performance, design, materials, testing, inspection, welding, marking, handling, storing, shipment, and purchasing of surface and subsea choke and kill equipment for use in the petroleum and natural gas industries.
These requirements provide for safe and functionally interchangeable surface and subsea choke and kill system equipment. This specification does not apply to field use or field testing. This specification also does not apply to repair of choke and kill equipment, except for weld repair in conjunction with manufacturing.
